Spring is finally here in the northeast! (Well sort of... it's still pretty darn cold.) And that means that it is time to consider how your boiler system will spend the next few months while it sits dormant offline. If you own and/or operate a facility with a commercial steam boiler that only gets seasonal use, then this topic is for you.

Cold Water In Your Boiler Causes The Worst Brain Freeze Ever - PART 2
So in our last post we expounded on the dangers of filling a steam boiler with cold water. Oxygen pitting and corrosion are the biggest common issues; however, if you are unlucky enough to add cold water to a boiler that is already running, you could have a much more serious problem on your hands. Basic high school physics teaches us that metal expands and contracts under extreme heating or cooling. Add to that scenario a high pressure steam vessel and cold water and BOOOM! It’s not common, but adding cold water to hot steam system could cause an explosion; it has happened and probably will happen again. (But not at your facility, because you read this post and you have taken the precautions necessary to avoid a catastrophe of that nature.)

Proper Safety Saves Lives, Time and Money in Water Treatment PART 2
In part one of this post, we discuss the rationale for your company adopting some kind of safety protocol. (You can read PART 1 of Proper Safety Saves Lives, Time and Money at the link at the bottom of this post.) Whether it is a safety procedures handbook that becomes part of your new hire package or something that is much more ingrained into your company’s daily culture is up to you and is really dictated by the type of business that you run. The circumstances of your business may not present very many potentially hazardous situations to your staff, in which case, your Safety Procedures could possibly be reviewed at a by-yearly meeting. However, if you run a construction business for instance, you may consider having a Weekly Safety Meeting. In some cases, your insurance company may even require it as a condition of your coverage.

Are Your Boilers Running Without Automated Blowdown?
Here in the northeast United States, it's getting pretty cold and boiler season is now officially upon us! One of the biggest mistakes that we see in boiler plant operation is improper or no blowdown control. The cost versus the savings in this regard can be staggering; and for most commercial or industrial facilities, it is really a no brainer. One of the ways that we strive to be the best water treatment company on the east coast is by making sure that educate our customers on the complete picture of water treatment, including their mechanical options.

Cooling Tower Water LSI: Is Your Money Going Down the Drain?
As industrial water treatment service professionals, we often hear the term “That’s how we always done it.” However, when it comes to treating the process water in a cooling tower, seasons change, water sources change, piping changes, loads change and chemistry changes. So why would anyone assume that the same setpoints that their cooling tower water treatment controls operated on years (or even months) ago would be exactly the same today? The way to be sure that a condenser water system is operating at peak efficiency and is balanced between reusing water as much as possible while simultaneously preventing scaling conditions from occurring cooling plant operators and water treatment service people to be mindful of two critical parameters: the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) and Cycles of Concentration.

Water Treatment Chemicals Are Right, But The Feed Location is Wrong?
One of the most common problems that we see in water treatment when we survey a new customer’s facility is improper chemical feed location. Our water treatment professionals evaluate dozens of chemical feed stations in many different types of facilities every month, and we are always concerned when we see the same type of problem over and over again. Water treatment chemicals being fed in the incorrect location is one of those problems. This issue is even more peculiar because many times we will find that the actual water treatment chemical program and methodology is very appropriate for the system being treated, however, because of how that program is being fed into the system, the results are less than desirable.
